사적 성소
근대 이후 우리가 사는 이 시대를 과학을 신봉하는 ‘과학의 시대’라고 한다. 천년쯤 전에 살았던 사람들은 신을 경배하는 ‘종교의 시대’를 살았고, 그보다 훨씬 이전의 고대인들은 자연의 힘을 두려워하고 숭배하는 ‘주술의 시대’를 살았다.
고대부터 인간은 다양한 자연현상에서 어떤 질서 즉 자신에게 유리하게 전용할 수 있는 일반법칙을 모색해왔고 오랜 모색을 통해 그러한 법칙을 많이 습득한 특정인은 왕이자 주술사가 되었다. 주술사들은 자연의 운행과 인생을 지시하고 통제한다고 믿는, 인간보다 우월한 힘에 대한 회유 내지 비위맞추기로 자신들이 거룩하다고 믿는 특정한 공간에서 주기적으로 숭배의식을 가졌다.
그러한 공간에는 돌이나 나무 등 그들이 특별한 힘을 가지고 있다고 믿었던 자연물이 있었다. 소수의 특권을 지닌 인간들은 하늘로 인도하는 성전의 계단이나 제의의 사다리를 통해 초월적이고 절대적인 신과 소통함으로써 그 힘을 나눠 가질 수 있다고 믿었다.
나의 작업은 고대의 인간들이 거룩하다고 믿었던 성소에 대한 호기심에서 출발한다. 나또한 아주 가끔씩 이기는 하지만 어떤 특정한 장소를 만나게 되면 알 수 없는 거룩함을 느끼게 되며 그런 곳에서는 왠지 고대에 비밀스런 의식이 행하여 졌을 것 같은 상상을 하곤 한다.
이번 작업은 이러한 나의 상상들을 사진으로 가시화시키는 작업이다. 신들이 행했던 최초의 작업은 카오스에 질서를 부여해 코스모스로 변형시키는 일이었다고 한다. 나또한 거룩한 느낌이 드는 어떤 장소를 선택한 후 무성하게 자란 잡초를 뽑아 정갈한 땅으로 만들고 신령스런 느낌이 드는 돌이나 나무들을 배치하여 일정한 형태와 구조를 부여함으로써 나만의 은밀한 사적 성소를 구축한다. 그런 다음 그 곳을 오가며 노닐다가 가장 마음에 드는 빛과 공기를 만나는 어떤 순간을 사진으로 기록한다.
나만의 사적 성소를 테마로 한 사진을 완성하기까지는 길게는 서너 달이 걸리기도 하는데 빨리 완성해야한다는 조급함 때문에 고통스럽기도 하다. 그러나 이 기간만큼은 마음속에 온통 나만의 사적 성소에 대한 성스러운 느낌이 가득 차 있어 행복한 시간이기도 하다. 척박한 현대인의 삶에서 잠시나마 비켜나 나만의 성소에서 피안을 꿈꾸는 순간은 내 영혼을 정화시키고 충만케 한다.

Private sacred place
It is said that we have lived in the age of science, and believed in the science, since the modern time. About 1,000 years ago, the people lived in the age of religion and worshiped gods, and the ancient people by far earlier than that lived in the time of incantation, feared and awed the power of the nature.
From the time immemorial, the mankind has searched the general laws or certain orders from various natural phenomena, to which it can apply to its favor, and a certain person, who learned a lot of such laws or knowledge through a long time effort to find them, has become a king and magician. The magicians had periodically held the worship rituals in a certain place, which they believed was sacred in their efforts to appease or cater to the superior power to the mankind, which people believed directed not only the operation of the nature but also the life of a human being.
In such places, there were usually some natural things like a stone or a tree, which the people believed had a special power. It was believed that a few of the persons with such special powers could communicate with a transcendental and absolute god through the steps in sanctuary or the ladder in ritual and share its power with them.
My art works started from the curiosity for the sacred places, which the ancient people believed were holy. Even though it was a very rare case for me, I would feel something holy at a certain place, about which I could not explain, and usually imagined that a certain secret ritual might have been held there at the ancient time.
This art work was about how to visualize my imaginations into a photo. It has been said that the first work the gods did was to change the chaos into the cosmos by putting an order into it. In the same way, when I chose a place, for which I felt something sacred, I turned it into a neat place by removing the thickly grown weeds and then established my private and covert sanctuary only allowed to me by giving a certain form or structure through some arrangement of the stones or trees, to which I felt something mysterious. After fishing the arrangement work, I spent time and time walking or playing around them, and took a picture of the moment when my favorite light and air met and got together.
It usually takes me up to 3 to 4 months at the longest to finish a photo based on the theme of my private sacred place only open to me, and I sometimes feel some agony out of the impatience that I should finish it sooner. However, only in this period, I am really happy as my heart is full of the holy feelings for my private sacred place only allowed to me. In this moment, I could get out of the barren contemporary life, even though it was nothing but a short period of time, and dream of the paradise of the life in my private sanctuary, and it can have my soul purified and replenished.
