생명나무
사려니 숲에서 한 그루 나무가 피어나고 있다. 아무렴 꽃도 아닌데 피어난다고 할 수 있을까. 그러나 나무는 분명 가지마다 주렁주렁 빛을 매단 채 새롭게 생명을 얻어 피어나고 있는 중 이다. 깊다 못해 영험한 숲속이나 잔잔하다 못해 그윽한 바닷가처럼 나무가 태어나는 숙연한 장소들은 이 심증을 훨씬 굳히게 만든다. 마치 영화 <아바타>의 한 장면처럼 거대한 자연이 온 힘을 쏟아부어 한 그루 나무에 땅 밑의 모든 기운들을 모아주고 있는 듯한 숙연함마저 든다.
이정록은 이렇듯 한 그루 나무를 성스러운 장소로 옮겨와 새롭게 생명을 주는 일을 벌이고 있다. 이 예사롭지 않은 이정록의 행위에 쓰이는 나무 또한 예사로울 수가 없으니, 작가에게 작품 속 나무는 ‘신목’이나 다름 없다. 무속신앙에서 하늘과 땅, 신과 인간이 만나는 거룩한 나무를 모시듯, 작가는 자연의 깊은 울림이 있는 곳에 나무를 세워 두고 자연의 영험함을 그러모으려고 한다. 분명 존재는 하지만 보이지는 않기에 더 놀라운 이 자연의 신비로움을 나무 한 그루가 오롯이 드러낼 수 있는 것일까. 그래서 작가는 나뭇가지마다 불빛을 밝혀준다. 어둠에서부터 찾아오는 빛이야말로 보이는 세계와 보이지 않는 세계를 이어주는 영매이기 때문이다.
아무리 빛에 대한 작가의 생각이 그윽하다고 해도, 그 빛이 포토샾에서 왔다고 하면 좀 시시해질 수도 있다. 이정록의 작품이 놀라운 건, 작가가 직접 생김새가 예사롭지 않은 나무를 골라 숲속까지 옮겨 설치하고, 현장에서 무려 열 단계가 넘는 촬영 조건을 활용해 아날로그 필름 한 장으로 이 풍경을 얻어 낸다는데 있다. 그러니 사진 한 장을 얻기위해 같은 장소에서 최소 일주일 품은 들여야 한다는 말은 엄살이 아니다. 자기 식으로 자연과 교감하는 이정록의 발상은 참신하지만, 그 고단한 과정들은 사뭇 종교적인 느낌까지 풍긴다. 그래서 그의 ‘생명나무’는 우리 유전자에 숨겨진 자연을 향한 경배의 마음마저 새롭게 피어나게 만든다.

Tree of Life
While life goes on, a tree is blooming in the forest. When it's not a flower, however, can I say it blooms? Yet, the tree is blooming with new life, while light hangs from every branch. Like a wood that is so deep as to be spiritual or sea that is so calm as to be serene, the venues that give birth to trees cement my belief further. Here, I even feel solemn as if great nature pours all her force to marshall all subterranean energies for that single tree, as in the film Avatar.
Lee Jeong-rok is involved in the work of moving a single tree to a holy place and giving it new life. The tree used in such an extraordinary act of Lee Jeong-rok should be anything but mediocre, so to the artist, the tree in the work is tantamount to a 'sacred tree'. As people worship a sacred tree through which heaven and earth, god and humans meet as in shamanism, the artist places the tree where nature's deep echoes lie and gather up her spirituality. Can a tree express the whole wondrous mystery of nature, which exists but is more surprising because it remains invisible? So, the artist lights up every tree branch. For light that comes from darkness is the psychic medium that connects the visible world with the unseen world.
No matter how profound the artist's thought on light is, if the light has come from Photoshop, it could be a little silly. What is amazing about Lee's work is that the artist himself picked some extraordinary-looking tree, moved it to the forest, and installed it there, before he obtained that one cut of analog film by using on the site the photoshoot requirements in over ten stages. So, it's no exaggeration to say that you have to brood there at least a week on the site to get one single picture. While Lee Jeong-rok's idea of rapporting with nature in his own terms is novel, the arduous process even smacks of religious devotion. Therefore, his 'Tree of Life' makes sure that even the nature-worshipping mind, hidden in our genes, blooms anew.
