나비Ⅱ / Nabi Ⅱ

 밤과 낮이 섞이고 빛과 어둠이 부드럽게 엉키는 시간이 오면, 깊고 그윽한 공간의 에너지가 서서히 드러난다. 그러면 나는 그 신비로운 순간의 에너지를 필름에 가득 퍼 올린다. 서서히 어둠이 내리는 동안 흙탕물이 서서히 가라앉듯이 내 안의 감각과 분별의 소음이 사그라진다. 시나브로 나는 경건한 태도로 공간의 에너지 안으로 깊숙이 침잠한다.

 세상이 완전한 어둠에 잠기고 내 안과 밖의 에너지가 완전히 조우하면 나는 그 때 다시 셔터를 올린다. 암흑 속에서 플래시가 번쩍,하고 터질 때마다 하나의 나비가 탄생한다. 하나, 둘, 셋, 넷, 다섯……, 수십 수백의 에너지가 나비가 되어 필름에 각인된다.

 내가 작업에 사용하는 순간광은 찰나의 빛이다. 찰나의 빛은 분명히 존재하지만 실체를 잡을 수 없는 에너지 그 자체로, 내 작업의 핵심 도구이자 주요한 상징이다. 보이지 않지만 분명히 존재하는 무엇, 그것으로부터 체감한 긍정적 에너지를 전하는 매개체로써의 빛은 밝음과 어두움, 부드러움과 강함, 조화와 균형 안에서만 발현 가능하다.

동양에서 나비는 영혼을 상징한다. 나비는 이곳과 저곳을 오가는 존재다. 이승과 저승의 경계마저도 자유롭게 넘나든다. 우연찮게도 나비와 같은 소리를 지닌, Nabi는 히브리어로 선지자를 뜻한다. 그런 연유로 다양한 형상과 기호였던 빛이 이 시리즈에서 나비로 응축되었다.

 그 동안 주로 호남에서 이루어졌던 작업이 제주에 이르게 된 것은, 원시적인 자연이 품은 근원적인 에너지에 이끌려서였다. 몇 해간 제주 작업을 하다가 중국 주가각으로 거처를 옮긴 것은 오랜 시간 자연과 더불어 삶을 꾸려온 전통적인 생활의 공간이 품은 에너지에 대한 호기심 때문이었다.  일본 토호쿠에서의 작업은 동일본 대지진으로 순식간에 폐허가 된 현대 문명의 터전에서 올리는 간절한 기도였다.

탄압받던 초기 기독교인들의 안식처였던 터키의 카파도키아에서는 강렬한 에너지를 내뿜는 대지와의 깊은 교감, 그 숭고한 체험을 시각화했다. 캄보디아의 씨엠립에서는 모진 풍파에도 여전히 신비를 간직하고 있는 크메르인들의 사원에서 얻은 고요와 평안을 담아내고자 했다.                                                                                                               2016 이정록

Nabi Ⅱ

When day and night get mingled and so do light and darkness, there surfaces the deep and soothing energy of time and space. Then I capture and record the mysterious energy of that moment on my film. As the darkness falls, my senses and reason get tranquilized. Slowly and quietly, my humble being gets drawn deep into the energy of the space.

When the world falls under the spell of the darkness completely, the energies in and out of myself meet each other once again and at that moment I press the shutter again. Everytime the flash goes off in the dark, a nabi comes into being. One, two, three, four, five……, tens and hundreds of energies turn themselves into nabis  and land on my film.

The “Instant Flash” that I use for my work is an instant light. It certainly does exist but is an energy that cannot be captured. It is the most essential tool and also the most significant symbol in my photography. We now have something invisible that does exist and the positive energy that was transmitted by it. The light as a medium of such energy can only be manifested through light and darkness, gentle and tough, and harmony and balance.

Butterflies represent the soul in the East. Butterflies fly between here and there, even crossing the border between life and death. Coincidentally, the Korean word for butterfly, nabi, also means “prophet” in Hebrew. Because of this, the light in various forms and symbols is concentrated as butterfly in this series.

I moved my work field from the Honam area (the south western part of S. Korea) where I did most of my work to Jeju. I was simply drawn by the fundamental energy that the Jeju island’s primitive nature held in it. After several years in Jeju, it was Zhujiajiao in China that my curiosity led me to for its great energy stemmed from the traditional lifestyle and nature of the town. The work in Tohoku was my earnest prayer, from the site of fallen civilization by the Tohoku earthquake.

Then I was in Cappadocia in Turkey, a once sanctuary for the suppressed Christians. There I tried to visualize the noble and sympathetic connection with the earth that was emitting an intense energy. Lastly, in Siem Reap, Cambodia, I wanted to highlight peace and calmness found in the Khmer temples that was still miraculously standing even after their long and harsh past.                                                                                                                          2016 Lee Jeonglok
